Derwent Art Pencils

I have created many pencil pieces growing up as an artist.  It wasn’t until I was 17 that I started to develop an interest for photo realism. I purchased a Walter Foster Pencil Sketch kit for beginners. I worked at a toy store and always noticed this kit in the arts and crafts section. I finally picked it up after a pay day and have loved graphite pencil ever since. The Walter Foster Pencil Kit included a small step by step manual on how to see shading in the object/subject you are creating, and how to translate that into a pencil sketch. Prior to purchasing this kit, I used a standard #2B pencil to draw and shade. I didn’t understand why my pictures looked so flat. After reading and following along with Walter Foster’s tutorials I started to understand the value system of shading, which gave me a foundation for understanding gradient colors in general.  Here are some of my works that showcase how a box of graphite pencils can create photo realistic artwork

I worked for hours at a stretch to complete these pieces during winter and summer breaks in college. I love large format paper and used 11X17 sketchbook paper. The Swimmer and the Young Lady with Soft Puppy are both based on catalog models. The Young Lady with Soft Puppy appeared in an Abercrombie & Fitch catalog. The Swimmer was from a swimsuit catalo.
